Childrens Outing - West Sacramento Spraygrounds

This was a much anticipated outing for many NMG families. The weather had been in the 100s over the last couple of days, and my kids were looking forward to fun in the sun with their friends. Since the event started a little later in the afternoon, we decided to go to Brodericks (also in West Sacramento) for a tasty burgers and fries lunch. We also indulged in their special ice cream sandwich! With our bellies full, we headed to the Bridgeway Lakes area. I noticed the dark clouds and slight wind, but figured it would be burning off soon and the breeze would be welcoming once it started to heat up. Unfortunately, that never happened! The wind picked up even more once we unpacked our gear. Spencer was anxious to get in the water play area and immediately got soaked with a few other brave kiddos. Owen, on the other hand, bundled up in his towel and quietly ate his snacks with his like-minded friends. We probably would have stayed longer except it started to rain... in the middle of the summer! It was quite comical. We all rushed to gather our belongings before the weather got worse. Even though the weather wasn't ideal, my kids and I still had a great time seeing our friends.

NMG Celebrates 25 Years!

Past and present Natomas Mothers’ Group members gathered recently to celebrate the group’s 25th anniversary supporting families in the community. Youngsters enjoyed Olympic-style games, a bounce house, playground and visit from a local fire truck.

Sacramento Vice Mayor Angelique Ashby and Assemblyman Roger Dickinson joined the festivities to present resolutions recognizing Natomas Mothers’ Group accomplishments over the past 25 years.

Nearly 70 people attended the event at Witter Ranch Park.

Members of the all-volunteer group meet multiple times a week to play and go on field trips. Member moms boast friendships developed during their years in the group often continue for years after their children enter school and grow up.

While the group’s focus is the children, the moms who volunteer their time to coordinate the activities and annual community project opportunities. Natomas Mothers’ Group has participated in both re-builds of the Fort Natomas playground and has supported organizations such as Tubman House, WEAVE and Make-A-Wish Foundation.

It is truly a blessing to belong to Natomas Mothers’ Group. We are an incredible group of women bringing together our children and families to play with each other, learn from each other, and support one another. Through my years as a member I have gained insightfulness and perspective on motherhood and made some truly amazing lifelong friends. But my favorite part about being involved in this particular group is that we know the value of sharing the blessings we have with others in need. As successful as our fundraising was, we also found other ways to give back to Tubman House this year. A drive was organized to collect toys, books, diapers, and wipes to donate to Tubman for use in their childcare center. As mothers, we
can all certainly appreciate the value of these items and know how incredible it is to see a child get excited about playing with a new toy. We also plan to have book drive in the spring for our children to pick out books for the children at Tubman House. An employee at Tubman House contacted us to thank us for our donation. She said that it was incredible to receive a donation and the support of a mother’s group, as many of their young parents feel judged by the greater parenting community.  My family and I have benefitted in so many ways from being a part of NMG and I am proud to be part of a group that finds a way to give back to the community our children are growing up in. I look forward to our continued support of Tubman House this year and other local charities in years to come. It is perhaps one of the most important lessons we can teach our children and our little way of making a difference in our community. Each year the Natomas Mothers’ Group chooses a charitable organization that we try to donate to and support throughout the year, and this year a very pressing issue made our choice clear. Tubman House in Sacramento is a local organization that supports young parents (17-21 years old) by helping them to complete job training, schooling, offering childcare, and teaching them necessary life skills (like budgeting) so they can successfully live on their own and support their families. Tubman House recently and unexpectedly lost their primary funding and was left desperate for help. This coincided with our annual NMG Halloween Party, which is our main event for raising money for the year’s charity. We had many members donate food for our lasagna dinner, which was available for purchase at the event. Katie Rozental, a member and local photographer, also donated her time and incredible skills to take pictures of the children at the pumpkin patch. The proceeds from the food and the pictures were collected for Tubman House. With the success and generosity of our members, and the
time and beautiful photos of our own Katie Rozental, we were able to donate $500 to Tubman House to help them in their time of need. This is the largest charitable contribution to date that we have made collectively as NMG!

Mommy and Me Day at Raley Field

One event that Spencer that really looks forward to is Mommy and Me Day at Raley Field.  Twice during baseball season, the Sacramento Rivercats open up Raley Field to the public for this free event. 

Scattered across the entire field were activities that your little ones can tire themselves out with.   The big attractions for Spencer and Owen were the bounce houses.  A few of us moms were about to set up at the end of field with snacks and refreshments while the kids played with Frisbees, t-ball, and ran around in circles.  We even got to see Dinger play the drums!  If you have never gone, there is another one in May and it is a whole lot of fun. 

Mothers Night Out - March 2012

This month's Mom's Night Out found us on an excursion to old Mexico—that is as close to Mexico as you can get on K Street.  On a Friday night in March, a small group of mom's ventured out in the pouring rain for a visit at Mayahuel Restaurant and Tequila Bar.  The downtown restaurant was a great place to wait for the storm to pass.  We enjoyed some zesty dishes--and that was just the conversation!  We sampled and shared each others enchiladas, tacos, and chile rellenos while sipping minty mojitos and smooth tequila.  If you ever make it to this restaurant, the Crema de Chile Poblano soup is a must try!  All warmed up from our good eats, we braved the storm to head home.  I was so thankful for a much needed MNO, and very grateful that we did not end up doing a scavenger hunt in the rain!

Childrens' Outing - Jelly Belly Factory

The Jelly Belly Factory!!! To this day, saying those words bubbles up a child like excitement in me like it did when i was a much smaller (and cuter) version of myself back in elementary school! The yearly Jelly Belly field trip was always one that my friends and i looked forward to. And even though my parents did not have a lot of extra money to spare, they always made sure their little girl had a few dollars to buy a special treat. Ahhh yes, many fond memories of that place. Its been upwards of 20+ years since i last took a tour. So i was so excited to take my boys there and experience it through their little eyes. And what a great outting it was!!

Several Natomas moms, and their adorable little ones, turned out for the tour. As we gathered together with our tour guide, we were given hats (or the option of a hair net) and told we had to wear them at all times during the tour. As you can see from the attatched picture, the kids totally rocked the paper hats. However we adults...yeah, we were cute too in our own special way. Goofy or not, we were on our way to discover all things Jelly Belly!

Our very wity and energetic tour guide (his name escapes me) lead our lively bunch down corridor after corridor overlooking massive machines, workers scurrying about  and highligting many neat facts about the company and its numerous products. Free samples abounded as we were allowed to taste the Jelly Bellies at each stage of development. Thank you tour guide man for not skimping on the samples!! It was through these samples that we learned Jelly Belly has partnered with Snapple and has launched new flavors of beans...Mango Madness is my favorite of the new ones!

At the end of our tour, we bid the fabulous tour guide adios and high tailed it to the gift shop!! The jelly bean sampling bar was jumpin' and Jelly Belly's own mascot came out to greet us! It really was a terrific outing. *Side Note* Tucked away in the back of the gift shop was a FUDGE COUNTER!!! Totally didn't expect that. Our family loves fudge so that was an added bonus for us! I decided to try the Red Velvet Cake fudge along with the Pistachio fudge as well. I highly recommend them both!

Needless to say, the Jelly Belly Factory rocked! Loads of fun had by kids and adults alike. But how can you go wrong when you mix heavy machinery, tons of sugar, free samples, great friends and fudge?! The answer is you can't!!

Plates - Mother's Night Out February 2012

Nine NMG moms had an inspiring dinner at the Plates Cafe in early February. Plates Cafe is a program of St. John's Shelter and if you've never heard of it, you should check it out at http://www.eatatplates.com/. The world needs more places like St. John's Shelter, where people (homeless women and their children in this case) are not only given a place to live in their time of need, but also job training and life skills to succeed on their own. Plates Cafe gives these women the opportunity to have on-the-job training in the food industry. 

On the first Thursday night of every month, chefs from some of the best restaurants in Sacramento come to Plates to make a 3 course meal for 120 guests for only $40-45 per person. We were lucky enough to attend on the night when the guest chef was Matt Woolsten of The Supper Club. I had never eaten at his restaurants before but had heard they were really good. 

First, we had the chance to sample three different appetizers that were being passed around -- my favorite was the Thai-spiced lamb pinwheel. As we stood around enjoying sampling the little hors d'oeuvres, we also sampled the wines from the featured winery, Caymus Vineyards. Next, we sat down to enjoy the "soup and sandwich" course. The sandwich, although only about 2 inches square, was a little "Portobello BLT," which was good, but I wish it would have been larger. It was served with a cute little "latte," which was really a creamy mushroom soup that looked like a latte, and was incredibly delicious. After that was the dinner served family style -- steak and a very interesting potato tart. Dessert was a really yummy apple crisp with fresh whipped cream. It was all great -- but thinking back a week later, my favorite part was definitely the mushroom latte. 

As dinner was ending, a few of the program "graduates" told their personal stories, and they were very moving. These women have worked very hard to come back from difficult situations -- but they didn't take the easy way out, and are working hard now to provide for themselves and their children. I was very impressed by the women there -- most of the ones working were quite competent, and our server in particular was very excited to be serving a table of moms. There were "tip jars" on the tables, in case any guests felt inclined to donate -- and I was very proud to see that our table seemed to have the fullest jar. 

We all enjoyed the dinner so much that many of us have already registered to attend in March or April. I know $40 is a large chunk of change to many of us these days, but trust me -- it's worth going at least once, and the money goes to a very deserving charity! Another wonderful NMG Moms Night Out, with some of my favorite ladies. 

Christmas Caroling

We gathered together at Katie’s house to go caroling.  But before we headed out, there was pizza and drinks for everyone who hadn’t eaten.  (Thank you Jen for organizing that.)  Afterwards, we rounded up the kids to practice songs.  With bells ringing and the kids singing, there was so much happiness all around.  Then we bundled up and headed out.  We stopped at a couple of Katie’s neighbors and we sang “Jingle Bells” and “Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer”.   Of course we stopped a few times to admire the Christmas decorations all around us.  Next, Jen took us into her old neighborhood and we were invited into one of the homes.  The kids were so cute as they stood and sang to the neighbors.  Afterwards, we went back to Katie’s house and sang to Peter, who was kind enough to listen to our singing.  Hot chocolate and cookies anyone?  Yes!  The kids decorated cookies, ate them, and followed that down with delicious hot chocolate.  Spreading some holiday cheer - what a wonderful way to spend an evening.

April Mom's Night Out - Chevy's on the River

Well due to the rain we had to change locations for our April Mom's Night Out but we all still had a great time! On Tuesday a large group of us met at Chevy's on the River for some dinner and great conversation! It was great to be able to get out of the house (minus the kids!) and spend time with friends.

NMG Spring Party

Our annual NMG Spring Party was another huge success. This year our party had two bounce houses, a face painter, a balloon twister, popcorn, cotton candy and of course a huge Easter Egg hunt and a visit from the Easter Bunny! Thanks to all who helped make this party great!

On Monday March 22nd some NMG members got together to help stuff eggs for our upcoming Spring Party and Easter Egg Hunt. If you haven't already heard; our Annual Spring Party is this Sunday, March 28 from 11am-1pm behind Fort Natomas. Our Spring Party is open to the community so please spread the word and we hope to see you there!

Family Outing - Effie Yeaw Hike

A huge group of NMG families broke the silence at Effie Yeaw Nature Preserve one Saturday in March! We enjoyed a beautiful 3 mile hike around the perimeter of Ancil Hoffman Park. The kids were great hikers and loved seeing all of the turkeys, roosters, deer, and owls!

Children's Outing - Jelly Belly Factory Tour

For our March Children's Outing we headed to the Jelly Belly Factory in Fairfield to take a tour. A group of 8 families made the trip to Fairfield to enjoy the outing and learn how Jelly Bellies are made. After a short wait in line we headed upstairs and had a group picture taken with Mr. Jelly Belly himself. The 40 minute tour was educational and fun for those over the age of two. The babies had a great time watching other members of the tour group. During the tour we got to taste thr Jelly Belly in their stage one, two, and final forms. The tour concluded with a free sample bag of Jelly-Flops. After the tour we headed back downstairs to the cafe for lunch. What a great day!

February Mom's Night Out - Alpha Fired Arts and Comedy Spot

A small group of NMG moms (Katie, Kate and myself) headed to Alpha Fired Arts in February for a Mom's Afternoon Out. We all picked out the ceramic pieces we wanted to paint and set to work. The conversation flowed as we worked on our masterpieces although you could tell when one of us was working on a particularly detailed part when we became silent and hunched over our piece. We compared painting/artistic skills and decided if the piece didn't turn out as nice as we hoped we would just tell people our kids painted them! Although, in the end, I think we were all proud of our art work. We were having such a great time talking and painting that the time flew by and before we knew it the staff was informing us that they closed in 5 minutes. It was a great afternoon out and I think all three of us are looking forward to going back! Katie and I decided that we were going to extend our Mom's Night Out and head to The Comedy Spot that night to see The Real Funny House Wives of Rio Linda. It was Amazing!! I highly recommend you go and see their show the next time they are performing at The Comedy Spot. I don't think Katie or I stopped laughing the whole show! It is definitely a show for moms by moms and a perfect outing for the NMG. It was a great way to end a fun day out!

Children's Outing - KidzArt

Plenty of budding Picassos turned out to showcase their artistic talents at the new KidzArt studio in February. There was so much excitement generated by this outing that KidzArt offered two classes so all the kids could participate. The classes were broken down according to age so that KidzArt could plan projects suitable for each age group. The older kids (ages 4 and up) went first and learned how to draw a dog and a gumball machine. Then is was the younger kids turn. They got the chance to use paint and make an ice cream cone using different shaped sponges and paint rollers. I think everyone had a great time and all of us moms were very impressed with the art our little ones were able to create!

Mom's Night Out - Dinner and The Comedy Spot

Five NMG moms began a fun evening out with dinner at Pete’s Restaurant and Brewhouse downtown. We had a delicious meal along with some interesting people watching opportunities! From there, we headed to Sacramento Comedy Spot’s swanky new midtown location. First up was Comedy from the Couch. Which was exactly as it sounds...three comedians sitting on a couch drinking beer. Each got up to take their turn at some stand-up comedy. They gave us some good laughs. The place completely filled up for the second show which was called the Anti-Cooperation League. It was an hour-long improv show based solely on the contents of a couple of audience members’ purses and wallets. We all managed to escape being brought up to the stage to have our purses gone through. One of our NMG moms (okay it was me) had even fleeced her purse before heading to the show in absolute fear that she would be dragged up on stage. The improv was hilarious and kept the audience roaring with laughter!
